On January 20, 2017, the inauguration of the 45th US President, Donald Trump, was held.
Mr. Trump was nominated for the presidential election by the Republican Party and won by winning 270 of the electoral college votes.
A key moment to note, in the inaugural speech of the 45th US president, was a statement about the establishment of a new US financial and political policy aimed at so-called re-industrialization.
Also, Trump's policy objectives are to lift restrictions on the extraction of all energy resources in the US, to review immigration policies, to preserve jobs for American citizens, and to maintain a five-year ban on outgoing officials to lobby on behalf of private companies.
Trump's rise to power was received with enthusiasm in the Russian State, Duma, and in other power corridors of the Russian Federation. Many Russian experts expressed hope that Donald Trump would abolish the economic sanctions imposed on Russia, by his predecessor Barack Obama, and bring Russian-American relations to a new level.
Another important event in the world in 2017 was the presidential elections in France.
The main rivals in the race for the post of head of state were the former Minister of Economy, Industry and Digital Affairs, Emmanuelle Macron, and the deputy of the European Parliament from the Northwest of France, the leader of the right-wing Nationalist Party "National Front", Marín Le Pen, known for her radical views on pan-European politics, and who once promised to withdraw the country from the European Union.
Russians, with every fiber of their being, wanted the victory of Le Pen, hoping thus to find, in France, a loyal ally, and the financial structures of Russian billionaire Gennady Timchenko, according to media reports, issued her a loan of nine million euros for the election campaign.
However, Marin Le Pen lost to Emmanuel Macron, gaining 33.9% of the votes. After that, she announced her departure from the European Parliament and returned to the leadership of the National Front.
Catalan Turmoil – A Fight for Independence
In early October, a referendum on independence was held in Catalonia. 90% of the inhabitants of the region voted for the withdrawal of the autonomy from Spain.
Madrid sharply opposed the secession of Catalonia and, as the referendum approached, the government sent additional police forces from Seville, Ceuta and Valencia into the autonomy to suppress street protests.
On October 27, Carles Puigdemon announced the independence of Catalonia from Spain. The central organs of the country dissolved the Catalan parliament and prompted early elections. Puigdemon, fearing persecution, went to Belgium and surrendered to the local police, but was released.
In December, early elections were held in Catalonia, and parties that favored independence won again. Puigdemon, speaking about the results, noted that "the Catalan Republic has beaten the monarchy".
However, so far, these are just words. The EU countries stand for the territorial integrity of Spain and the recognition of the independence of Catalonia is not intended.
The Liberation of Syria from ISIS
On December 11, Russian President, Vladimir Putin, announced the withdrawal of Russian military units, which took part in the struggle against the Islamic state group, from Syria.
According to Putin, at present, the ISIS militants have remained practically without territory, and the moderate Syrian opposition, which also fought against government troops, no longer threatens the authority of Syrian President, Bashar Assad.
However, it is too early to speak about a complete and unconditional victory over the "Islamic state". Many terrorists fled to Libya and Afghanistan. According to the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, more than 10 thousand ISIS insurgents have already accumulated on the border of Afghanistan with Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, and this number is increasing every day.
Jerusalem, Once Again, Became the Capital of Israel
One of the most scandalous political decisions of 2017 was the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. President of the United States, Donald Trump, has already instructed the State Department to begin the transfer of the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
"I decided that it was time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital. Israel is a sovereign state that has the right to decide the location of its own capital”, Trump explained in his decision.
The foreign policy steps of the new owner of the White House caused a wave of outrage in the world. Many world leaders warned that Trump's act could lead to a new round of conflict between Israel and the Palestine.
The issue of Jerusalem was submitted to the UN General Assembly for discussion. Following the vote, 128 UN Member States called on the United States to revoke the decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the state of the Jews. Only nine states supported the USA (Israel, Guatemala, Honduras, Nauru, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Togo and Palau).
In November, the military of Zimbabwe took control of the state. On Wednesday, November 15, 93-year-old President, Robert Mugabe, was placed under house arrest, and his spouse, Grace, who was to become a successor, went abroad. In the opinion of African experts, China could become the main beneficiary of the coup in Zimbabwe.
This is obvious and predictable due to the fact that China leads a policy of creating a zone of influence among African and Asian countries. The next president of Zimbabwe is the former first vice president of the country, 75-year-old Emmerson Mnangagwa.
